Geo-Engineering: China’s Game Opening Volley
Christmas came in early in China this year, as the whole world witnessed the well covered results of China’s efforts to Geo-Engineer it’s way out of the effects of drought…which to the better informed might actually be the effects of Climate Change, industrial pollution, and other effects from changing weather patterns. Although there hasn’t been very much official reaction to this event from governments, or international governing bodies, it remains to be seen how the implications of this overture into full scale Geoengineering will be assessed by the Free Press, and Environmentalists. What is more curious however is the way this mater is simply treated as a natural undertaking to alleviating “drought”, in an otherwise muted response from most of the World Press and Mainstream Media for what amounts to an obvious example of what happens when we tinker with Mother Nature, and how unpredictably the natural environment can react to such actions.
It’s certain that Chinese officials weren’t actually trying to produce a heavy snowfall which severely disrupted commercial air traffic and local shipping transport during the storm. As such, this event is a very simple reminder of just how slippery and unpredictable the slope can get, once we begin tampering with nature…Regardless of how good our intentions might be at the time.
Since we’ve been getting interested in how the Mainstream Media has been covering environmental issues, and looking for signs of bias, or lassitude when it comes to upsetting the status quo, let’s take a closer look at how this event has been presented for Mass Consumption…
Lost in the day-to-day deluge of news and infotainment, it has been quietly reported that China is facing it’s worst drought in decades in it’s northern regions, and has been resorting to major river diversions and cloud seeding since last February.
Here’s a report from Weather.com that at least touches upon the risks and unintended consequences and risks of this activity as ordered by China’s “Weather Modification Bureau”. Does that officially designated bureau name not at least spur some tiny Orwellian twinges in anyone?
In a previous article we looked at the nature (no pun intended) of Geo-Engineering, and concluded that there wasn’t enough conclusive evidence of what or of how our world leaders could possibly hope to regulate such activities on a global scale. What was clear though, was that there were ample opportunities to continue playing God with the environment, and that at least the United States were already venturing up to the edge of space with some curious atmospheric tests in the Mesosphere.
For whatever reason, the Mainstream media really doesn’t seem terribly interested in developing bigger stories around such events, and we’re simply left to believe that this is either fringe news (weather oddity), a passing curiosity (beautifully snow covered tourist spots) or that it simply doesn’t warrant any investigations beyond the standard regurgitation of official press releases.
For example…Here’s the officially reported outlook on this years opening salvo in larger scale Geo-Engineering in China from CNN
Note that this story is really all about the drought in China. There is barely any mention of the effects of cloud seeding, much less the ecological circumstances and ongoing environmental conditions in China to begin with. Presumably the rigors and scrutiny of holding Press credentials in China will all but assure us (here in the West at least) that only the most officially sanctioned forms of news reporting will reach us from that part of the world. This expectation should come as a surprise to nobody, and at the very least this event allows for an impressive display of technological and military might. At least NASA is better at publicizing it’s own weather experiments here in the West, even though we’re still not quite sure what they were up to in the Mesosphere with the Navy and Deptartment of Defense
As such it is still seems far too soon to begin any serious discussions of the implications for Social disruptions, and ‘weaponizations’ of this type of engineering in these early days of widespread Change.
